Geotechnical Engineer
Location: Essex
Salary: Up to £65,000 basic (DOE)
Hours: 8:30am - 5:00pm, Monday to Friday
Our client is looking to recruit an experienced Geotechnical Engineer to work on Piling Design and Estimation at their Essex-based operations. Reporting directly to the Managing Director, the successful candidate will bring strong technical expertise in piling design and geotechnics, combined with commercial awareness to deliver cost-effective, buildable solutions. This role is suited to a specialist who can take ownership of designs and tenders with minimal supervision and confidently engage with clients, consultants, and project teams. You will have key involvement across the full design lifecycle, from early feasibility and tender support through to installation.
Duties
Predominantly office-based with regular participation in design meetings, collaborative reviews, and direct client communication on technical and methodological matters.
Produce designs and estimates for embedded retaining walls, including contiguous and secant piles (retaining wall expertise is essential).
Design and estimate a range of bearing pile types, including CFA piles, rotary bored piles, and load-bearing foundations.
Provide technical input and design checks for temporary works, including working platform design and crane base design.
Support preparation of method statements and design reports.
Develop cost-effective, compliant, and buildable tender solutions.
Review tender documents, drawings, specifications, and ground investigation data.
Carry out cost analysis, risk assessment, and value engineering.
Obtain and analyse supplier and subcontractor quotations.
Prepare and submit detailed tender documentation within deadlines.
Attend pre-tender and post-tender meetings.
Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, consultants, and supply chain partners.
Assist with budgeting and forecasting for upcoming projects.
Key Skills & Experience
Qualified as a Geotechnical Engineer with proven experience as a Piling Designer / Estimator
Strong understanding of piling design, geotechnics, and ground-structure interaction.
Proficiency in WALLAP and OASYS; experience with Repute and Plaxis advantageous.
Experience using design and estimating software and Microsoft Excel.
Ability to interpret ground investigation data, drawings, and specifications confidently.
A practical, solutions-focused mindset with an interest in constructability and value engineering.
