Job Description

General Counsel

Remote | Full-time. (Must have significant overlap with EMEA time zones)

Overview

We are looking for an experienced, proactive General Counsel to serve as sole in-house counsel for a growing multi-entity business. You will own the legal function end-to-end, report directly to the CEO, and shape how legal risk is managed across the organization. The role spans corporate and commercial operations, investment-related legal work, and cross-border structuring. You will manage all outside counsel relationships and be expected to identify risks before anyone asks. The most important quality we are looking for is initiative. We need someone who flags risks and asks questions that nobody assigned, not someone who waits for instructions. We expect our legal team to stay current with AI advancements in legal practice and actively incorporate AI tools into daily workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Audit and maintain all consumer-facing legal surfaces including terms of service, pricing compliance, advertising guidelines, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Monitor relevant regulatory developments and flag changes that could create business exposure.
  • Review and manage the full spectrum of commercial contracts across the business.
  • Coordinate with outside counsel on potential litigation, disputes, and regulatory inquiries.
  • Review and negotiate investment documentation, fund terms, and related agreements.
  • Ensure compliance with banking, custody, and counterparty protocols across all entities.
  • Handle loan documentation renewals and ongoing compliance monitoring.
  • Coordinate with internal leadership on regulatory filings and entity-level legal issues.
  • Conduct periodic reviews of investment documentation, counterparty arrangements, and risk exposure.
  • Support corporate transactions, due diligence processes, and cross-border structuring as needed.
  • Coordinate with external specialists on tax, regulatory, and jurisdictional matters as they arise.
  • Ensure ongoing legal compliance across all business operations and identify gaps before they become liabilities.

Required Skills & Experience

  • JD from an accredited law school, barred in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • 5 to 10 years of legal experience, ideally a mix of law firm and in-house roles.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple outside counsel relationships simultaneously.
  • Comfortable operating as a sole legal resource for the business.
  • Actively incorporates AI tools into legal research, drafting, and risk identification workflows.
  • Proven track record of proactively identifying legal risks before they become liabilities.
  • Comfortable working across multiple international jurisdictions and coordinating cross-border legal work.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and operate effectively without detailed instruction.

Beneficial Skills & Experience

  • Background in corporate or commercial law at a mid-market or BigLaw firm before transitioning in-house.
  • Exposure to fund finance, investment documentation, LP agreements, or securities-related matters.
  • Familiarity with consumer protection law or e-commerce regulatory environments.
  • Experience supporting corporate transactions or due diligence processes.
  • Experience advising multi-entity corporate groups or complex investment structures.
