Evidence Advisor, Data Analysis and Statistics (Fixed Term) - 31375

We are seeking two Evidence Advisors to join the EA’s Natural Capital and Ecosystem Assessment (NCEA) Programme. These roles focus on designing and analyzing data from our water monitoring networks covering rivers, streams, groundwater, lakes, estuaries, and coasts.

The NCEA programme is part of the wider Defra-led initiative, gathering comprehensive data on ecosystems to highlight their benefits for people and the economy, i.e., natural capital. Your analyses will provide evidence to help policymakers recognize the true value of nature and support the UK’s environmental, net zero, and biodiversity targets.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide statistical input into network design and implementation, with expertise in hydrogeology, freshwater ecology, or estuarine and coastal environments.
• Collaborate with network designers to ensure networks are unbiased and representative.
• Apply robust analysis techniques to evaluate network performance and interpret environmental monitoring data.
• Develop reproducible analytical pipelines.
• Conduct exploratory data analyses to identify environmental relationships, using domain knowledge and systems mapping.
• Integrate alternative datasets for regional and trend analysis reporting.
• Contribute to developing metrics and indicators, advising on future reporting needs.

This is a fixed-term contract until 30/05/2027.

The Team:

You will join the Data Analysis and Statistics work package within the NCEA programme, supported by the Strategic Evidence Design and Assessment (SEDA) team. We promote a friendly, collaborative, and diverse work environment, providing training and support to all staff.

Experience and Skills Required:

Background & Knowledge:

• Degree or higher qualification in environmental science, hydrogeology, freshwater ecology, with data analysis and statistics training.
• Understanding of freshwater, coastal, estuarine, or groundwater management and monitoring.
• Experience analyzing environmental or ecological data, including statistical modeling and understanding data complexities.
• Familiarity with current/emerging environmental data science practices.
• Experience with statistical model fitting and robustness testing is advantageous.

• Proficiency in R programming.
• Detail-oriented with a passion for data analysis and problem-solving.

Flexible/hybrid working arrangements are supported. Travel may be required for team meetings in Birmingham/Bristol.
