Job Specification: Electrical Design Engineer (Senior - Lead)
Business Unit: Data Centre Design Consultancy (Client Side) Location: Remote Reporting to: Associate Director/Director
Overview
We are seeking highly skilled Senior and Lead Electrical Design Engineers to join our specialist data centre design consultancy team. These roles will be responsible for driving the design, coordination, and delivery of complex electrical systems for hyperscale, colocation, and enterprise data centre environments. You will work directly with clients, end users, and multidisciplinary engineering teams to develop high‑quality, technically robust designs from concept through to construction.
Core Responsibilities (All Levels)
Lead and produce electrical designs for data centre infrastructure including: HV and LV power distribution UPS systems (static and rotary) Standby generation Earthing and bonding Lighting and small power Busbar distribution systems Develop design documentation: calculations, reports, schematics, single-line diagrams, and specifications. Collaborate with mechanical, structural, architectural, and commissioning teams. Ensure compliance with: UK/EU electrical standards (BS7671, EN standards) Uptime Institute Tier guidelines Client technical specifications Local authority and utility provider requirements Participate in technical design reviews and value engineering workshops. Support tender evaluations, contractor queries, and construction phase design support. Contribute to continuous improvement of design processes and best practices.
Experience & Requirements by Level
Senior Electrical Design Engineer
Experience
Typically 5-8 years electrical design experience. Demonstrable experience designing critical power systems. Prior data centre project exposure preferred but not essential if background includes mission‑critical environments (pharma, hospitals, industrial). Competent in delivering multiple design packages under guidance from a Lead or Principal Engineer.
Technical Competencies
Strong grasp of: LV distribution design UPS system selection & load calculations Generator sizing Cable sizing and fault level studies Competent in electrical calculation software (e.g., Amtech/Trimble, Dialux, ETAP beneficial). Ability to produce design deliverables independently with technical checking by senior leadership.
Soft Skills
Good communication and client‑facing ability. Ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams. Strong organisational skills and proactive problem solving.
Principal Electrical Design Engineer Experience
12-18+ years experience in electrical engineering with deep specialism in data centre design. Demonstrated ability to lead multi‑disciplinary design teams on hyperscale or global data centre programmes. Strong experience engaging with end users, developers, and hyperscale clients at a strategic level.
Technical Competencies
Recognised expert in:
High‑voltage system design, utility grid integration & negotiations Full MEP system interaction & resilience strategies Advanced power systems: network modelling, short‑circuit analysis, arc flash studies, and system selectivity Designing to Uptime Institute Tier III & Tier IV
Ability to define project technical strategy, design principles, and standardisation frameworks.
Leadership & Strategic Responsibilities
Acts as the Technical Authority for electrical systems. Leads QA/QC process and sets engineering standards across projects. Provides key input into bids, proposals, and business development. Trains, mentors, and develops the engineering team. Coordinates with Directors on resource planning, pipeline forecasting, and client strategy.
Soft Skills
Exceptional communication, influencing, and negotiation ability. Ability to represent the business as a subject matter expert. High‑level problem solving, innovation, and risk management.
Lead Electrical Design Engineer
Experience
Typically 8-12+ years experience in electrical building services design. Proven track record leading electrical design on major data centre projects. Experience interfacing directly with hyperscale or colocation clients (Google, AWS, Meta, Microsoft, etc., if applicable). Capable of managing electrical design delivery across entire projects or programmes.
Technical Competencies
Expert knowledge of: Complex power distribution (N+1, 2N, 2N+1 systems) HV systems design and utility interfacing Advanced power system studies (discrimination, arc flash, harmonic analysis) Resilience modelling & load diversity assessments Ability to technically lead teams and review work from Senior and Junior Engineers. Strong commercial awareness and ability to influence design strategy.
Soft Skills
Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills. Comfortable presenting to clients, design teams, and senior leadership. Strong leadership in design coordination, technical decision-making, and project delivery. Ability to mentor and develop junior engineers.
