Job Description
Design Engineer – Cabling\nLocation: Open to Home based / Scotland wide with trips to sites / offices monthly\n\nRole Purpose:\n\nAs a Design Engineer you'll be involved in delivering technically complex projects with a focus on substations, cable systems, plant and primary design. Project works span the entire energy system—, transmission, distribution, and storage.\n\nThis role requires strong technical expertise in cabling systems and experience in guiding multi-disciplinary teams. You will be instrumental in the design and successful delivery of high-voltage infrastructure, ensuring compliance with standards and project requirements.\n\nSome of the key deliverables in this role will include:\n\n * Lead the design and development of projects (11kV–400kV), ensuring compliance with technical and safety standards.\n\n * Develop technical solutions and provide guidance on all aspects of cable design.\n\n * Review and approve specifications, drawings, and calculations for accuracy and compliance.\n\n * Produce design cost estimates, resource plans, and delivery programmes in response to tender requirements.\n\n * Undertake Construction Design Studies (CDS) for installation and construction methodologies.\n\n * Define scope and manage site surveys, including topographical, profiling, geotechnical, and steelwork assessments.\n\n * Liaise with clients, contractors, and stakeholders to ensure quality and timely delivery.\n\n * Provide technical support to tenders and offer mentoring/training to junior engineers.\n\n * Work within Freedom/NGB’s quality assurance framework or established project methodologies.\n\n * Attend site visits, inspections, and stakeholder meetings as required.\n\nWhat we’re looking for:\n\n * AutoCAD experience and Symcat ideally.\n\n * Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering (typically 2:1 or above) in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or a related field.
