Deputy Head of Engineering – Scenic Fabrication & Design
A leading creative production company, renowned for delivering exceptional work across live events, performance, and visual media, is seeking an experienced Deputy Head of Engineering to support the leadership of its fabrication department. This is an excellent opportunity for a technically strong and people-focused professional to play a key role in delivering innovative projects that combine artistry, engineering, and precision manufacturing, while working closely with the Head of Engineering.
Purpose of the Role
The Deputy Head of Engineering will support the day-to-day operation of the metal fabrication department, assisting in the delivery of projects that meet quality, safety, and programme requirements. Acting as second-in-command, the role combines hands-on technical involvement with supervisory responsibility, supporting team performance, workflow coordination, and continuous improvement. The Deputy Head will also deputise for the Head of Engineering when required.
Key Responsibilities

Support the Head of Engineering in leading and motivating the engineering team to deliver complex scenic and architectural fabrications to specification and deadline.

Assist in coordinating production schedules in collaboration with project and workshop management.

Help maintain and improve departmental processes, with a strong focus on safety, quality, and best practice.

Oversee day-to-day workshop activity, ensuring fabrication tools and equipment are used safely and maintained appropriately.

Provide hands-on technical support where required, including fabrication, problem-solving, and build reviews.
*
Support skills development within the team through mentoring, training, and apprenticeships.
*
Promote a positive and collaborative team culture, encouraging clear communication and professional development.
*
Step into the Head of Engineering role during periods of absence or peak workload as required.
Candidate Profile
The successful candidate will be an experienced fabrication professional with strong technical capability and emerging or established leadership experience.

Proven experience in scenic, architectural, or bespoke metal fabrication (or a closely related industry).
*
Strong MIG and TIG welding skills, with relevant engineering qualifications preferred.
*
Ability to interpret and work accurately from detailed technical drawings.
*
Good understanding of materials, fabrication methods, and build techniques.

Experience supporting workload planning, resource allocation, and on-site installation activities.
*
Previous supervisory or senior workshop experience, with the ability to lead by example.
*
Sound understanding of Health & Safety practices within a workshop environment (formal certification advantageous).
*
Strong organisational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
*
Comfortable using standard office software (e.g. Windows, Google Workspace, or equivalent).
*
A proactive, adaptable approach with the ability to remain calm and solutions-focused under pressure.
