You will support the delivery of bespoke numerical modelling projects to enable decision making in subsurface geoengineering, focusing on simulating subsurface flow and associated processes. Projects span geological storage of nuclear waste, energy (geothermal, oil & gas, CO₂ storage, H₂ storage, wind), mining, water resources, and infrastructure.
A Little More About Your Role
Driving the geoscience modelling team’s capabilities in subsurface flow simulation, including multi‑phase flow, coupled thermo‑hydro‑mechanical‑chemical processes, finite volume analysis and mesh generation.
Assisting with the development of industry‑leading solutions (e.g. for geoscience data interpretation, numerical simulation and risk analysis) within the global geoscience modelling team and supporting the development of WSP’s in‑house FracMan® modelling software.
Staying abreast of the latest technological advances and industry trends in subsurface risk assessment and model‑based decision making, including flexible learning of new technical skills.
Being proactive within WSP’s global practice area networks (PANs) to seek opportunities to collaborate on business and technical initiatives across WSP’s Energy, Infrastructure, Nuclear Waste and Mining businesses.
Developing and supporting links with commercial clients in WSP’s various business sectors, seeking opportunities to offer existing services, innovate new solutions or deliver software training courses.
Supporting business development and writing proposals to extend our portfolio of modelling projects and technical offerings.
Producing high‑quality scientific/technical reports and delivering presentations to clients and WSP colleagues.
Communicating project deliverables to clients and advocating for our modelling services to external and internal stakeholders.
Your Team
You will join a multi‑disciplinary team of experts in the UK focused on technologically driven consulting projects and software solutions. Projects cover nuclear waste disposal, infrastructure, water, energy, and mining.
Our business and clients span the globe, covering major international companies, government organisations, and academia.
The role reports to leaders of the WSP Geoscience group in the UK. The UK‑based team has approximately 20 members spanning geology, geomechanics, flow simulation, geophysics and software development, collaborating internationally.
Available office locations include London, Reading, Bristol, Cardiff, Exeter, Nottingham, Manchester and Edinburgh, with preference for Bristol or Edinburgh.
Qualifications
Doctorate or Master’s degree (or equivalent) in a mathematical or numerate geoscience subject.
Strong track record of the use and development of numerical subsurface modelling software and techniques, particularly subsurface flow simulation.
Experience with scripting languages (ideally Python, or similar such as R, MATLAB).
Resourceful, independent, with strong initiative and decision‑making skills.
Excellent verbal communication skills (English) and the ability to convey technical concepts effectively.
Excellent scientific writing ability, with experience producing high‑quality technical reports and scientific papers.
Consulting experience delivering geoscience modelling projects in Energy, Nuclear, Water, Environment, and Infrastructure sectors.
Experience with software development in Python, Fortran or C++.
Experience in data analysis and management using scripting and database languages such as SQL/PostgreSQL.
Successful preparation of bids for competitive tenders.
Experience liaising with clients and managing professional relationships.
Project management skills.
