Job Summary

We are excited to advertise a full time Interventional Radiologist post in Radiology services at University College London Hospitals, based in the Radiology Department at UCH. The post-holder must have subspecialty experience in interventional radiology, as well as general / oncology cross sectional radiology, in order to support the delivery of the radiology services at UCH. The Radiology Department is very active in both teaching and research, and the post-holder would be expected to participate in these.

The post includes 2 research sessions per week, funded for 2 years. It is expected that the successful applicant would use this time to develop a portfolio of clinical research within interventional radiology. The post-holder would also be supported to apply for further funding to continue with a career as a medical academic in IR. Doctoral level research degree (MD/PhD) should be in progress or completed. An established track record in research would be desirable. The post-holder would work with the academic department at UCL Centre for Medical Imaging (CMI). This is a tremendous opportunity for an early-career researcher, who could use this as a platform to launch their academic career.

The successful appointment will be working with a team of consultants who specialise in Interventional radiology.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will work closely with the existing team of Consultant Radiologists to develop and enhance the imaging service which the Department provides to acute, outpatient and inpatient services and strengthen the reporting profile of the Department.

The post holder will deliver high‑quality consultant‑level interventional radiology care within a major London teaching hospital, contributing to elective and emergency services and managing complex cases within a multidisciplinary setting. They will demonstrate advanced procedural expertise, sound clinical judgment and a strong commitment to patient safety, governance and service excellence.

A key component of the role is leadership in academic interventional radiology. The successful candidate will be expected to play an active role in clinical research, including the development and delivery of research studies, contribution to grant activity, and dissemination of research through publication and presentation. They will support the academic development of trainees and students through teaching, supervision and mentorship, and contribute to an environment that integrates research with clinical practice.

The main duties of this post are as follows:

• Ability to perform most aspects of vascular and non‑vascular interventional radiology, including uro‑radiology and HPB.
• Develop the academic IR service under the guidance of the clinical lead and DCD.
• Participate in teaching and training.
• Participate in audit.
• Contribute to clinical research via the UCL Centre for Medical Imaging.
• Provide interventional radiology on‑call service (currently 1 in 7 rota with prospective cover and 2 PA supplement).

Job responsibilities

The post holder will show the ability to balance clinical excellence with academic productivity, working collaboratively to drive innovation, service development and evidence‑based practice within interventional radiology.

The balance between direct clinical care activities and supporting programmed activities will be agreed with the successful candidate as part of the initial job planning process.

The successful applicant will also take part in the interventional radiology on‑call rota.

Applicants should possess the FRCR or equivalent and be on the specialist register or within 6 months of obtaining their CCT.

The post holder will join the UCLH interventional radiology team, which is made up of eight consultant radiologists: Dr Jowad Raja, Dr Graham Munneke, Dr Conrad Von Stempel, Dr Ahmed Al‑Nowfal, Dr Miles Walkden, Dr Julian Hague, Dr Jocelyn Brookes and Dr An Ngo. The interventional radiology team is part of the larger UCLH radiology department, with 60 consultant radiologists.

The post-holder will be accountable to the Divisional Clinical Director. The post is within Radiology in the Imaging Division of the Surgery and Cancer Clinical Board.

Person Specification

Professional Qualifications (Essential)

• Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practise.
• Relevant CCT or equivalent [equivalence must be confirmed by PMETB/GMC by date of GMC].
• Entry on the GMC specialist register or eligibility for entry within 6 months of the date of AAC.
• FRCR or appropriate specialist qualification.

Experience (Essential)

• At least one year of recognised sub‑specialty training in Interventional Radiology.

Skills and Abilities (Essential)

• Ability to perform all aspects of Interventional Radiology, both interventional and non‑interventional, adult cross‑sectional reporting.
• Acute and general diagnostic imaging.

Communication (Essential)

• Ability to communicate with clarity and intelligently in written and spoken English; ability to build rapport, listen and negotiate with colleagues, patients, relatives, GPs, nurses and other agencies.

Personal and People Development (Essential)

• Evidence of leadership skills.
