Required to fill this replacement post within the Ophthalmic Department at St. James University Hospital. This 10‑PA appointment is for a Consultant Ophthalmologist with special interests in Vitreo‑Retinal and General Ophthalmology services. The post will deliver 10 PAs supporting the Vitreo‑Retinal & General Ophthalmology teams at St. James University Hospital and on surrounding hospital sites as part of a varied job plan.
Main duties of the job
Support Regional Emergency VR Services – Contribute to the 24/7 emergency VR on‑call rota, ensuring timely assessment and surgical intervention for urgent referrals from within the trust and surrounding hospitals.
Deliver high‑quality clinical care – Provide expert management of both elective and emergency vitreoretinal conditions, perform complex retinal surgery and lead VR outpatient clinics.
Contribute to service development and innovation – Participate in the ongoing development of the VR service, supporting improvements in clinical pathways, efficiency and integration with medical retina and urgent care services.
Promote education and training – Supervise and mentor ophthalmology trainees, fellows and other healthcare professionals, maintaining the trust's commitment to high‑quality postgraduate education.
Engage in clinical governance and audit – Participate in audit, quality improvement and risk management activities to ensure safe, evidence‑based practice and compliance with national standards.
Support research and academic activity – Engage with research and teaching in collaboration with the University of Leeds, contributing to the trust's academic excellence and innovation in ophthalmology.
Enhance multidisciplinary and regional collaboration – Work closely with colleagues across subspecialties, primary care and the wider Integrated Care System (ICS) to deliver coordinated and patient‑centred retinal care.
Qualifications
FrcOphth or equivalent, and inclusion on the Specialist Register or eligibility to join within 6 months of CCT if currently in a UK training programme.
Established skills in Vitreo‑Retinal surgery and related specialties including emergency ophthalmology.
Experience in complex cataract surgery and general ophthalmology.
Strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching; research interest is desirable.
Excellent communication and team‑working skills; strong commitment to teaching and service development.
Person Specification
Dynamic individual capable of working in a fast‑paced ophthalmology department within a large teaching hospital.
Willingness to work full or part time, and willingness to job‑share where appropriate.

Interviews will be held Tuesday 23 June 2026.
Applicants will be required to give a 10‑minute presentation on their last 100 surgical cases audit and innovative ways to tackle the Vitreo‑Retinal backlog.
