Position Summary
The 5 Axis CNC Miller is responsible for programming, setting, operating, and maintaining 5 axis CNC milling machines to produce high precision components. This role ensures parts are manufactured to strict quality standards while optimising machining strategies, tooling selection, and cycle times. Experience working with simultaneous 5 axis machines including Brother, Matsuura, and DMG palletised and robotic loading systems is required.
Key Responsibilities
Machine Setup and Operation
Set up and operate 5 axis CNC milling machines, including tooling, fixtures, work holding, probes, and offsets.
Prepare machines for production runs including loading programs, verifying tool libraries, and confirming setup sheets.
Perform first off inspections and maintain consistent high quality output throughout the run.
CNC Programming
Create, edit, and optimise CNC programs using CAM software such as SolidCam, Fusion, CloudNC or direct G code editing.
Adjust toolpaths, speeds, feeds, and machining strategies to improve accuracy and efficiency.
Troubleshoot program related issues in simultaneous and positional 5 axis machining.
Tooling and Process Control
Select appropriate tooling, holders, and cutting strategies based on component and material requirements.
Monitor tool wear and replace tooling to maintain dimensional accuracy and surface finish.
Identify opportunities for process improvement, cycle time reduction, and enhanced tool life.
Quality Inspection
Conduct in process and final inspections using micrometres, verniers, height gauges, bore gauges, and other precision equipment.
Ensure parts meet drawing specifications, GD and T requirements, and customer quality standards.
Complete inspection documentation and maintain traceability records.
Troubleshooting and Maintenance
Diagnose machining issues such as chatter, dimensional variance, poor surface finish, or tool failures.
Perform routine preventative maintenance and report mechanical, spindle, or control issues.
Support continuous improvement and structured problem-solving activities.
Production Efficiency
Manage multiple machines where required to maintain workflow and productivity.
Support lights out or unattended machining through reliable setups and tool monitoring.
Maintain accurate production logs and follow established manufacturing processes.
Safety and Compliance
Follow all safety procedures when working with high speed rotating machinery and cutting fluids.
Ensure safe handling of work holding, heavy components, and sharp tooling.
Maintain compliance with relevant quality standards including ISO9001, AS9100, and medical manufacturing requirements.
Qualifications
Qualifications
Experience and Education
Minimum 3 years’ experience in CNC milling with strong hands on 5 or 3 - axis machining.
Experience working with Brother, Matsuura or DMG machines preferred.
Ability to read and interpret detailed engineering drawings and GD and T.
Experience machining stainless steel, aluminium, titanium, and engineering alloys.
Skills
Excellent attention to detail.
Strong analytical and problem-solving ability.
Competency in precision measurement and quality control practices.
Ability to work independently and as part of a machining team.
Understanding of lean manufacturing principles preferred.
