Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) Location: London - Onsite 2/3 days a week Contract Type: Interim / Inside IR35 Duration: 6 month About the Opportunity A major UK institution is seeking an experienced and visionary Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) to lead its cyber and information security strategy across a large, complex environment. This role sits at the heart of a high‑profile organisation supporting tens of thousands of users, world‑class research activity, and critical digital services. Key Responsibilities As CISO, you will:
Define and deliver the organisation‑wide information and cyber security strategy. Lead the Information Security Group, providing direction, vision, and measurable outcomes. Drive a secure‑by‑design approach across all change initiatives, platforms, and digital services. Own all security frameworks, policies, and standards, ensuring they remain current and effective. Oversee the organisation’s security control environment, ensuring operational effectiveness. Establish and manage a robust reporting and risk governance framework. Partner with stakeholders across academic, technical, and professional domains to raise security maturity. Work closely with the Data Privacy Officer to align data protection controls with organisational needs. Serve as a visible leader and ambassador for security internally and externally.
We are looking for a senior leader with:
Extensive experience delivering information and cyber security in complex, multi‑stakeholder environments Proven ability to lead transformational security change Deep understanding of risk management, governance, and security best practice Strong knowledge of modern security technologies, frameworks, and processes Experience building and managing high‑performing teams Strong budgeting, planning, and organisational capabilities Excellent communication skills, able to influence at all levels, including senior executives Experience in large public‑sector, education, or research environments Relevant certifications such as CISSP, CISM, or postgraduate qualifications
