Business Development Manager (Technical Engineering Background) - ICP / Utilities - Durham - £45k to £65k OTE (Bonus + Car)


Role: Business Development Manager

Location: Durham (3x Days Per Week), UK (with national travel for client/site visits)

Salary & Package: £45k to £65k OTE (Bonus + Car)


Overview

This role is designed for an individual with a strong engineering foundation - such as a background in sales engineering, commissioning, project engineering, or project management - who is ready to transition into the commercial side of the business. It offers the opportunity to apply technical knowledge to drive business growth, influence large-scale projects, and play a pivotal role in developing new client relationships across industrial, infrastructure, renewable energy, and EV charging sectors.


Key Responsibilities

  • Identify, develop, and secure new business opportunities across the UK, particularly in high-value schemes exceeding £1m.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, partners, and key stakeholders.
  • Manage and nurture existing client accounts to ensure repeat business and long-term partnerships.
  • Represent the company at industry events, exhibitions, and networking forums.
  • Deliver compelling client pitches and presentations that combine technical insight with commercial value.
  • Maintain accurate sales forecasts, pipeline updates, and CRM records.
  • Monitor industry trends, competitor activity, and market positioning to shape sales strategy.
  • Work closely with internal engineering and delivery teams to align client requirements with technical capabilities.


Skills & Qualifications

  • Degree in Civil, Electrical, or related Engineering discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • Proven ability to translate technical knowledge into commercial advantage.
  • Strong sales and business development skills, ideally gained within engineering or construction-related industries.
  • Understanding of contractual frameworks, particularly building and infrastructure contracts.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and influencing skills at all business levels.
  • Highly organised, able to prioritise effectively and meet deadlines under pressure.
  • Strong presentation and negotiation skills, both written and verbal.
  • Experience in relevant industry experience, ideally combining technical and client-facing roles.
