Building Services Engineer

Location: Portsmouth or Stevenage

Rate: £40 per hour (Umbrella)

Contract: 12 months initially

Hours: 35 per week (4.5‑day week)

Security: SC Clearance (BPSS+)

About the Role

We’re looking for an experienced Building Services & Fabric Clerk of Works to carry out inspections, quality checks, and compliance oversight across Mechanical, Electrical, and Fabric installations on a range of high‑profile projects.

You’ll act as the technical eyes and ears on site — ensuring every installation meets the highest standards of quality, safety, and design compliance.

Key Responsibilities

Conduct regular inspections of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, fire systems, controls, structure, and building fabric Ensure compliance with drawings, specifications, Building Regulations, H&S legislation and industry best practice. Identify, document, and support the resolution of defects and non‑conformances. Maintain clear daily records, photos, logs, and produce weekly/monthly reports Verify materials and workmanship against required standards. Attend site and technical meetings, providing professional technical input. Ensure all handover documentation (O&M manuals, as‑builts, Safety Files, commissioning records) is accurate and complete.

What We’re Looking For

Essential

Experience as a Clerk of Works, Site Inspector, or similar building services quality‑focused role. Strong knowledge across Mechanical, Electrical, and Building Services systems. Experience in construction site management and quality control. Ability to read/interpret engineering and architectural drawings. Excellent communication and report‑writing skills. Competent using Google OS, AutoCAD, and relevant software. Organised, proactive, diplomatic, and able to work independently. Full UK driving licence. HNC/HND, Degree, or City & Guilds in Building Services, Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, Construction, or similar field

Desirable

Membership of ICWCI. NEBOSH or similar H&S qualifications
