Automation and Controls Engineer

Role Purpose:
The Automation & Controls Engineer will be responsible for designing, commissioning, and maintaining automation software and hardware for new and existing manufacturing lines. This role plays a critical part in ensuring the reliability, safety, and efficiency of our production systems through hands-on engineering, project management, and collaboration with suppliers and internal stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities:
Design and commission automation software and associated hardware on new or existing production equipment.
Carry out testing and verification of machine safety and control systems.
Manage and progress automation and controls suppliers to ensure timely project delivery.
Oversee onsite installations and manage external contractors to ensure compliance with company standards.
Chair technical meetings and negotiate with internal stakeholders to align on project goals and deliverables.
Support the Process Development Leader with project-related tasks and activities.
Provide technical guidance to suppliers on the design of controls, electrical, and safety systems to ensure adherence to GWM standards.
Produce clear and detailed project status reports, escalating issues where required.
Maintain and update facility standards using lessons learned from previous projects.
Qualifications & Experience:
Minimum qualification: HNC (Higher National Certificate) in Electrical, Automation, or Controls Engineering (or equivalent).
Proven experience in designing, programming, and commissioning automated control systems in a manufacturing environment.
Strong understanding of Body-in-White (BIW) assembly processes.
Experience in modifying machine control systems, including safety and communication protocols.
Knowledge of functional machine safety systems and safety grading requirements.
Ability to create and modify automated software sequences.
Experience managing external suppliers and contractors in controls and automation projects.
