Overview Our Business Development & Marketing team plays a critical role in enhancing the Firm’s reputation, expanding its client base and driving revenue growth. The team develops and implements strategic marketing plans to promote the Firm’s legal services, leveraging digital and traditional marketing channels to reach target audiences. They conduct market research to identify industry trends and client needs, positioning the Firm competitively within the legal marketplace. The team also manages client relationships, orchestrates business development initiatives, and seeks opportunities for partnerships and networking. Through compelling content creation, event planning and public relations efforts, they ensure that the Firm maintains a strong market presence and continues to attract and retain clients. Role The Associate Director, Business Development plays a pivotal role in supporting the strategic objectives related to Business Development, leading and/or contributing to initiatives that raise the profile of the Firm and optimise client engagement. This role demonstrates significant autonomy and influence, shaping or leading the strategic direction of Business Development activities to support the Firm's long-term Business Development goals. Recognised as an expert, the Associate Director provides innovative thought leadership and develops unique solutions to complex issues related to new business growth, client management, serving in both managerial and individual contributor capacities. With a strong presence in key arbitration centres worldwide, we deliver strategic, commercially focused solutions to protect our clients’ interests in cross-border disputes. Responsibilities
Strategic planning and client cultivation
Research and competitive analysis: Define and drive the research strategy for practice groups, ensuring alignment with firm-wide business objectives and client strategies. Lead the integration of research insights into practice group client strategies and long-term business goals. Provide leadership in analyzing competitive intelligence to inform BD strategy and decision-making and development of practice specific BD initiatives and strategies.
Client relationship mapping
Analyze client relationship data to identify long-term engagement opportunities and strategic insights. Lead the development and execution of practice-specific client engagement strategies to drive growth. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless coordination of client interactions across the firm. Provide strategic insights on client and industry dynamics, developing recommendations for client engagement and relationship-building initiatives. Align practice-specific goals with the broader firm-wide client engagement strategy to ensure consistency. Drive cross-functional collaboration, fostering a holistic approach to client relationship management across the firm.
Existing client strategy execution
Lead and execute the overarching strategy for practice group client management. Work with partners and client teams to refine and optimize client engagement strategies. Provide strategic insights and leadership on client relationship growth. Oversee the development of key metrics for tracking client engagement. Ensure alignment of practice group strategies with firm-wide objectives.
Client feedback reviews
Lead major matter client feedback sessions for large (e.g. >$5m) or strategic clients. Contribute to the development of strategic client feedback frameworks, including reverse feedback with clients where appropriate. Provide high-level recommendations and insights from client/event-driven feedback to partners. Develop strategies for improving client satisfaction based on feedback. Provide leadership on action plans for client satisfaction.
Proposals and pitch excellence
Pitch preparation and coordination: Integrate market intelligence and competitor analysis into pitch strategies to ensure competitiveness. Innovate pitch approaches to stay ahead of industry trends and align opportunities with firm-wide performance metrics (e.g., profitability). Develop strategic insights from pitch trends to drive continuous improvements in the process. Contribute to pricing strategy development for complex pitches. Provide insights to drive continuous improvements in the pitch process.
Practice positioning and lawyer activation
Thought leadership and market positioning: Collaborate with practice leaders to align practice goals with thought leadership strategies and the firm’s roadmap. Drive forward-looking insights to inform the firm's thought leadership roadmap and oversee practice-specific market positioning and client outreach.
External events – client interaction opportunities
Define comprehensive engagement strategies for practice group client events and interactions. Plan, coordinate, and lead client relationship management during practice group events. Ensure consistent engagement across multiple practice areas and firm priorities during external events. Evaluate and provide strategic insights into event participation, linking it with long-term client strategies and firm-wide goals. Measure the strategic impact of external events through client feedback, business outcomes, and ROI.
Onboarding of new lateral partner hires
Lead the onboarding strategy for new partners and lateral hires, ensuring a seamless integration with practice group and firm-wide objectives. Provide high-level strategic advice to new hires on how to drive business development within their practice areas and key clients. Ensure that all relevant stakeholders are involved in the onboarding process to provide insights and guidance.
BD people and performance management
Team operations and change leadership: Lead and manage large-scale BD initiatives, aligning BD activities with the firm’s broader strategic vision and client engagement priorities. Communicate and drive adoption of BD initiatives and new technologies, tools, processes or structures across the M&BD function. Identify key talent gaps and implement strategies for hiring, training and retaining top BD talent. Oversee and drive team performance, ensuring team members are motivated and aligned with the firm’s BD goals. Implement coaching and mentoring programs and work with managers to identify leadership potential across the BD teams. Mentor and develop M&BD team members, fostering a high-performing team culture.
Location
This is a full-time role based in Paris, New York or London. Our standard office hours are 09:30-18:00, with a current requirement for 4 days in the office per week.
