Job Description

Role Title: Architectural Designer – Central Design England


Reports To: Architectural Design Manager / Senior Architectural Designer


Role Purpose

Support the development, maintenance, and delivery of standard housing and apartment designs, specifications, and construction details. Work closely with regional teams and third-party consultants to ensure compliance with current regulations, NHBC standards, and design principles. Contribute to projects from concept through to construction as part of a dynamic central design team.

Key Responsibilities

Design and Documentation

  • Assist in producing standard housing and apartment portfolio, including planning, working drawings, and sales packages using AutoCAD Architectural Desktop, in line with Building Regulations, NHBC standards, Architect Brief, and Standard Construction Details.
  • Prepare general arrangements, sections, elevations, bespoke details, electrical layouts, bathroom layouts, and marketing materials.
  • Maintain and update standard construction/internal specifications to align with current legislation.

Collaboration and Coordination

  • Liaise with regional land, planning, and technical teams to identify portfolio requirements and gaps.
  • Work with nominated suppliers to integrate and approve their designs within drawing packages.
  • Attend workstreams, collaboration meetings, and design reviews with regional teams and consultants to ensure deadlines are met.
  • Engage with consultants and suppliers to assess legislative changes affecting products.

Quality and Compliance

  • Visit sites to review product performance and gather feedback from sales and construction teams.
  • Investigate new products and construction methods to improve sustainability.
  • Ensure compliance with principal designer responsibilities, including maintaining the designer’s risk register.
  • Assist in responding to site queries and maintaining the document management system.

Communication and Reporting

  • Contribute to group-wide bulletins on portfolio updates and design changes.
  • Maintain house type specifications within the ‘MyHome’ specification database.
  • Support the creation of visual materials using Photoshop and InDesign.
  • Provide feedback to senior team members on emerging design, technical, or functional issues.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Qualifications: HNC in Construction (minimum); design-based degree advantageous.
  • Technical Skills:
  • Strong knowledge of Building Regulations and NHBC standards.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD; competent in MS Word, Excel, Outlook.
  • Understanding of Revit, InDesign, and Photoshop desirable.
  • Knowledge of timber frame construction and renewable technologies.
  • Personal Skills:
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Flexible, organised, and able to manage a varied workload.
  • Proactive in learning new software and technologies.
