Aboricultural Consultant
New Today
TR33 Ltd is a leading independent arboricultural company based in Cardiff, South Wales.
Our consultancy division specialises in high-quality tree surveys, risk assessments for private, commercial, and public sector clients. Our work supports planning applications, tree preservation orders (TPOs), and sustainable tree management across the region. With a focus on efficiency, accuracy, and profitability, we empower our consultants to deliver robust, defensible reports using recognised industry standards like QTRA, BS5837, and VALID.
We’re seeking a proactive Arboricultural Consultant to join our small, dynamic team. If you’re technically sharp, client‑focused, and thrive on self‑managing site surveys without cutting corners, this is your opportunity to grow with us.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct tree condition assessments, risk evaluations, and tree surveys on sites of varying sizes (e.g., small urban plots to larger grounds).
Prepare detailed, defensible survey schedules and reports using templates, incorporating management recommendations, BS5837 categorisations, and risk methodologies like QTRA or VALID.
Manage client relationships, including delivering tough news (e.g., RPA constraints on developments) with empathy, confidence, and technical robustness.
Identify and assess pests/diseases (e.g., Ash Dieback, Sooty Bark Disease, Beefsteak Fungus) and recommend proportionate actions based on targets, occupancy, and site factors.
Stay current with industry developments, media cases (e.g., Sycamore Gap), and standards revisions to ensure reports withstand scrutiny from authorities or planners.
Work efficiently to balance site time with reporting, maintaining profitability without compromising quality.
Collaborate with the team while self‑managing workloads, including occasional highway exclusions or verbal site briefs.
Qualifications
Professional qualification in Arboriculture/Forestry, or equivalent.
Proven track record in tree surveying/risk assessment using QTRA, VALID, or similar validated systems. Knowledge of BS5837:2012 (and 2023 revisions) categories and applications.
Strong understanding of tree risk methodologies, their benefits/limitations vs. ad‑hoc approaches; pest/disease impacts (e.g., Ash Dieback stages, Sooty Bark on Sycamore, Beefsteak Fungus in veterans); TPOs, RPAs, and planning interfaces.
Confidence in client‑facing discussions, especially difficult conversations. Self‑awareness, honesty about weaknesses, and ability to self‑manage time/reporting.
Up‑to‑date with current guidelines and industry best practice.
Full UK driving licence; comfortable with outdoor work in all weathers; proficient in MS Office/Excel for templates.
Level 3 Arboricultural/forestry qualification or higher.
Experience with veteran trees, ecological surveys, or expert witness.
Familiarity with software like Otis or Arbortrac.
Passion for efficient workflows to keep surveys profitable.
Local to South Wales preferred.
Willingness to travel for site visits outside of local area with potential occasional overnight stays.
What We Offer

Opportunities for career progression in a growing consultancy.
