About Us:
Yunuru is a tech4good organisation dedicated to providing free, high-quality education tailored to the needs of learners in Africa. We are on a mission to empower underserved communities by delivering innovative educational solutions that focus on soft skills, career readiness, and personal development. Our entirely volunteer-based team are proud to be collaborating with a Kenyan university, with the goal of creating a Pilot that will be tested with students later this year.
Role Overview:
Are you passionate about designing impactful, user-friendly products? We’re looking for a talented Volunteer Product Designer to help shape the user experience for our innovative e-learning platform. This initiative will provide foundational communication skills to Kenyan university students, empowering them to confidently transition into the workforce.
As Product Designer, you’ll own the end-to-end design of the pilot platform, develop prototypes, and ensure the user experience is both engaging and accessible. Your designs will directly impact how Kenyan university students interact with the platform and build their communication skills.
You’ll be the sole designer on this project, giving you the opportunity to leave a clear personal mark on a product that aims to create real social impact.
Key Responsibilities:
- Take the work of previous volunteers to finalise the design of the Pilot experience, and work with the developer to turn that into a live service for testing with students.
- Create wireframes, mockups, and high-fidelity prototypes for the e-learning platform.
- Ensure designs are desktop-first but responsive, accessible, and culturally relevant to Kenyan university students.
- Update and maintain design systems and guidelines as necessary to maintain consistency across the platform.
- Work iteratively based on feedback from stakeholders and pilot testing.
- Support the team in refining the overall user experience and visual aesthetics of the platform.
Requirements:
- Available immediately with sufficient capacity to collaborate with the developer over the summer.
- Proven experience in product design, user interface design, or a related field, with a strong understanding of user-centered design principles.
- Experience designing educational, social impact, or culturally diverse products is a plus.
- Proficiency with Figma.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Time Commitment:
This is a volunteer position, and we appreciate any time and effort you can dedicate to the project. The expectation is to take the 80% complete designs and finalise ready for the developer within the next 2-3 weeks, and then make relevant iterative updates over the summer period as the pilot is tested and refined..
