We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate
SLD Teaching Assistant
to join a welcoming and well-resourced
Special School in Hounslow , supporting pupils with
Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD)
and associated complex needs. This SLD Teaching Assistant is a highly rewarding opportunity for individuals passionate about specialist education and inclusive practice within a nurturing and structured learning environment.
As a SLD Teaching Assistant, You will work closely with experienced SEN teachers and a multidisciplinary team to support pupils learning, communication, independence, and emotional wellbeing, helping them to reach their full potential.
Key Responsibilities: Provide tailored 1:1 and small-group support as an
SLD Teaching Assistant , following individual EHCPs and personalised learning plans. Support pupils with
communication needs
using AAC approaches, including
Makaton, visual timetables, symbols, and sensory cues . Assist in delivering
differentiated learning activities
focused on functional skills, independence, and life skills. Support pupils with
sensory processing needs and emotional regulation , enabling positive engagement with learning. Work collaboratively with
class teachers, therapists, and support staff
to implement consistent and effective SEN strategies. Help maintain a
structured, calm, and inclusive classroom environment
that promotes confidence, engagement, and wellbeing. Observe, monitor, and record
pupil progress , contributing to reviews and multi-agency meetings where appropriate. Support pupils during
transitions, routines, and unstructured times
throughout the school day.
Qualifications and Skills: Experience working with children or young people with
SLD or complex SEND , ideally within a special school or specialist setting. A good understanding of
severe learning difficulties, communication differences, and inclusive SEN practice . A patient, empathetic, and adaptable approach, with the ability to respond positively to individual needs. Strong
teamwork and communication skills , with confidence working as part of a multidisciplinary team. A
Level 3 qualification
in Supporting Teaching and Learning, SEN, or a related field is desirable (but not essential). An
up-to-date Enhanced DBS
(or willingness to obtain one).
