An established and growing Civil and Structural Engineering Consultancy based on the south side of Leeds, with excellent transport links and access to the wider region, is seeking an experienced Senior Structural Engineer to join its expanding office. The Consultancy has a well-established and specialist focus within the field of specialist living, including care homes, retirement living, integrated communities and extra care facilities, delivering projects across the UK from Scotland to the South West. In addition, the team works closely with a select number of contractors on a range of commercial developments closer to home, particularly along the M62 and A1/M1 corridors. Typical project values range from £8m to £15m and continue to grow, offering exposure to complex, technically engaging schemes.
The opportunity exists for a Senior Structural Engineer to join the Leeds office and work closely with the Technical Directors, who will actively support ongoing professional and career development. The role is predominantly technical in nature, with responsibility for the delivery of robust, efficient and well-coordinated structural designs. Depending on experience, ability and career aspirations, the position may also develop to include elements of job-running and project management responsibility over time.
The successful individual will be a self-starting, positive and enthusiastic engineer who is progressing confidently in their professional development. They will demonstrate adaptability and creativity in developing engineered solutions and show a genuine desire to collaborate with colleagues, clients and other professionals. A strong sense of technical ownership is essential, with responsibility for ensuring the correct level of design information is produced to the appropriate standard and at the right time, maintaining structural integrity throughout the design process.
Applicants will hold a degree in Structural or Civil Engineering, ideally to 2:1 level, and will be recently or nearly Chartered with either MIStructE or MICE, or able to demonstrate extensive and relevant experience at a comparable level. The role requires strong IT capability, including experience with Microsoft Office and industry-standard structural design software such as TEDDS, Tekla Structural Designer, MasterSeries and Autodesk Revit or CAD. Good problem-solving skills are essential, with the ability to produce hand sketches seen as advantageous, alongside an interest in low-carbon design, sustainability or other areas of ongoing professional development.
The role will include attendance at client meetings and visits to construction and project sites. Responsibilities will include undertaking schematic and concept structural design, carrying out the analysis and design of superstructures, foundations and infrastructure using both hand calculations and software, working collaboratively within a team of engineers and technicians, preparing written technical reports and correspondence, inspecting existing or dilapidated structures and developing remediation solutions, and coordinating with specialists such as piling or ground improvement contractors. The role also involves maintaining strong relationships with existing clients, contributing to design meetings and ensuring compliance with Building Regulations, health and safety requirements and best engineering practice.
