Job Description

COMPANY OVERVIEW

Our client is a well-established and highly regarded main contractor with a strong presence across the London construction market. Known for delivering complex, high-value commercial projects to exacting standards, this business has built a reputation for technical excellence, collaborative delivery, and long-term client relationships with some of the most recognised names in the industry.

Operating across multiple sectors, the company consistently wins prestigious contracts that demand the highest levels of commercial management, programme delivery and quality assurance. Their portfolio speaks to a business that is trusted to deliver where others cannot — a track record that continues to drive sustained growth and a healthy forward order book.

With a structured and professional commercial function, this is an organisation that takes career development seriously. Senior professionals are given genuine responsibility, supported by experienced leadership, and empowered to make meaningful commercial decisions. It is a business where performance is recognised and progression is achievable.

As the company continues to grow its project pipeline in London and the surrounding region, they are looking to strengthen their commercial team with an experienced Senior Quantity Surveyor who is ready to step up and take real ownership of their projects.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT & PROJECTS

You will be embedded within a high-performing commercial team, working across a portfolio of complex construction projects within a fast-paced, professional environment. The projects in the pipeline are typically large-scale, technically demanding builds that require a commercially astute and proactive approach to delivery.

The culture here is collaborative and results-driven. Teams are encouraged to take ownership, challenge processes and contribute commercially at every stage of the project. You will work closely with site teams, engineering functions and client representatives, ensuring seamless communication and commercial control across the full project lifecycle.

Exposure here extends well beyond day-to-day cost management. You will be involved in early-stage commercial strategy, tender review, risk identification and subcontractor negotiation, as well as programme monitoring and reporting at a senior level. This is an environment that will accelerate your career and broaden your commercial skillset significantly.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead commercial management across multiple live projects, maximising returns while maintaining strong client and contractor relationships
  • Conduct detailed reviews of tender documentation to identify commercial risk, contractual obligations and potential opportunity
  • Manage and mentor commercial team members, driving best practice in cost control, reporting and programme management
  • Review, approve and actively manage subcontractor and supplier appointments in line with project requirements
  • Administer contracts in accordance with agreed terms, including preparation and management of EOT notifications, claims and compensation events
  • Monitor project performance against budget and programme, identifying variances early and implementing effective mitigation strategies
  • Prepare accurate, timely reports on cost, progress and commercial status for senior leadership and client stakeholders
  • Define and manage project scope, goals and deliverables in close collaboration with the delivery team
  • Provide contractual advice and support to project teams, ensuring all members understand their obligations and responsibilities

WHAT YOU NEED

  • Degree in Quantity Surveying or equivalent, ideally recognised by the SCSI and/or RICS (MRICS desirable)
  • Minimum 6 years’ post-graduate experience in quantity surveying within the construction industry
  • Proven track record managing commercial delivery on complex, high-value construction projects
  • In-depth knowledge of standard forms of contract including RIAI, JCT, FIDIC and NEC
  • Strong commercial acumen with the ability to identify and manage risk, opportunity and contractual exposure
  • Excellent negotiation and communication skills, with the ability to manage conflict professionally and constructively
  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with clients, PQS teams and key supply chain partners

WHAT YOU’LL GET IN RETURN

This role offers a highly competitive salary of up to £90,000, alongside a wider package commensurate with seniority. You will join a business with a strong reputation and a robust project pipeline, gaining exposure to high-profile work and the strategic influence that comes with reporting directly to a Commercial Director. For the right person, this represents a genuine opportunity to progress into a senior leadership position within a business that values commercial excellence and rewards performance.
