Senior Maintenance Engineer

Purpose of the Role We are seeking an experienced Senior Maintenance Engineer to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of mechanical systems across commercial, industrial, and educational facilities in Derby. This role combines hands-on maintenance with project oversight, ensuring all systems are operating optimally, compliant with statutory standards, and supported by robust preventative strategies. Key Accountabilities Personally carry out day-to-day and planned maintenance of mechanical installations, including boilers, radiators, pumps, valves, plumbing fixtures, HVAC systems, ventilation units, and plant room equipment.

Manage reactive maintenance, diagnosing and repairing mechanical faults across heating, ventilation, pumps, plumbing, and other building mechanical systems.

Execute Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) programs, completing scheduled inspections and servicing of equipment (e.g., pipework inspections, HVAC filter changes, pump lubrication).

Authorise, monitor, and supervise maintenance works and contractors, ensuring high-quality workmanship, compliance with technical standards, and timely completion.

Conduct thorough inspections and condition surveys of engineering systems, producing detailed reports with defect analysis, recommendations, priorities, and cost estimates.

Support and improve preventive and predictive maintenance strategies to optimise performance and reduce downtime.

Ensure compliance with Mechanical Regulations, Gas Safe, CDM Regulations, and all relevant health, safety, and regulatory standards.

Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance mechanical system reliability, efficiency, and energy performance.

Required Qualifications & Certifications Candidates must hold relevant professional qualifications in mechanical engineering and maintenance. Essential certifications include: Gas Safe Registration

Mechanical Engineering qualification (HNC, HND, NVQ Level 3+ in Mechanical or Building Services Engineering)

Health & Safety and CDM Awareness

Previous experience with Boiler, HVAC, Pump, and Plant Room Equipment maintenance

Experience & Skills Minimum 3 years' experience in mechanical maintenance across commercial, industrial, or educational sites.

Proven ability to manage reactive and planned maintenance programs efficiently.

Experienced in supervising contractors and managing engineering projects.

Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, including heating, ventilation, pumps, plumbing, valves, air conditioning, and plant room operations.

Capable of fault diagnosis and repairs on a variety of mechanical equipment.

Excellent organisation, problem-solving, and communication skills.

Ability to work independently and meet deadlines under pressure.
