SEN Teaching Assistant – Autism Support (Rotational Role)
Are you an experienced SEN Teaching Assistant with a strong background in autism support? This welcoming, forward-thinking non-denominational three-form entry community school in Barnet is seeking a calm, knowledgeable and confident SEN / Autism Support Teaching Assistant to join their team from February 2026.
This is a school where inclusion is central to everyday practice. Autism is a significant and well-understood part of the school’s SEN provision, and staff work collaboratively to ensure pupils feel supported, understood and able to succeed. The school is housed in a fantastic modern building, offering a spacious, well-resourced and fully accessible learning environment. The grounds are equally impressive, with beautifully landscaped outdoor spaces that enhance learning, play and wellbeing. An on-site resourced provision for pupils with physical disabilities and a pre-school assessment centre for children with complex needs further reflect the school’s inclusive ethos.
About the role
This is a rotational SEN support role, rather than being fixed to one class all day. You will support two verbal autistic pupils:
• One in Year 2
• One in Year 5
Both pupils access learning differently from their peers and require adapted work and thoughtful support to manage classroom demands.
Key responsibilities include:
• Providing in-class support to autistic pupils during lessons
• Supporting pupils to complete adapted or differentiated work
• Helping pupils step out of class appropriately to regulate when needed
• Using calm, consistent and low-level behaviour management strategies
• Supporting social understanding and classroom routines
• Working flexibly across classes as part of a wider SEN team
The ideal candidate will:
• Have proven experience supporting autistic children in school settings (essential)
• Use appropriate, respectful language and strategies when working with autistic pupils
• Be calm, patient and emotionally attuned
• Understand autism presentation, regulation needs and sensory differences
• Be confident working independently while collaborating closely with staff
This is an excellent opportunity to join a supportive school with outstanding facilities, a clear SEN vision and a genuine commitment to inclusive education.
