What
will you be doing?
We’re looking for an experienced Project Engineer or Lead
Commissioning Engineer to support the National Grid OPTEL Gen 3 replacement
programme, working within a Critical National Infrastructure environment and
primarily as part of the survey team.
You’ll play a key role in undertaking and coordinating
detailed site surveys, reviewing drawings, specifications, and engineering
standards to identify risks, assumptions, and dependencies. You’ll gather and
verify accurate site data—layouts, hardware locations, cable routes, labels,
measurements, and photographic records—to inform design development, build
planning, risk management, and safe project delivery. You’ll work closely with
designers, specialist survey teams, and stakeholders to coordinate survey
requirements, ensure site access, and provide clear technical feedback to
support informed decision-making. Onsite surveying is 2-3 days per week which may require overnight accommodation. H&S is an important aspect of the survey, awareness of foreseeing hazards and risks, as well as managing themselves and others; asbestos awareness etc
Alongside survey activities, you’ll support wider project
engineering delivery—developing accurate BoM with detailed
consumables, producing Inspection and Test Plans and quality documentation,
resolving technical queries with designers and suppliers, and carrying out
on-site inspections and audits. You’ll monitor progress, address issues
proactively, and ensure all activities meet client, safety, quality, and
environmental requirements, supporting projects through to acceptance into live
service.
What you’ll
bring?
Essential
You’ll
be an experienced PE, with previous detailed survey knowledge.
You’ll
have a Networking Technical Background specialising in circuit delivery
and equipment ordering and Services and Solution Delivery
An
understanding of:
o CWDM, DWDM, SDH, Carrier Ethernet,
MPLS-TP, SYNC, OTDR
o Telecoms DC power principles
o Fibre optic installation and test
experience
o Multi-protocol testing
You’ll
come with a proactive approach to managing projects tasks and issues.
You’ll
be skilled and experienced in the Microsoft Office suite
Required to be SC cleared and complete the National Grid competent persons supervisor course.
Desirable
Experience
within a Critical National Infrastructure environment is a plus.
Background
in design assurance, regulatory engagement, or technical governance
roles.
