Principal Legal Counsel, Pensions and Investments (Fixed Term Contract)

London / Cardiff / UK Remote | £140,000 + Benefits

Responsibilities

  • Act as a trusted adviser and partner to the Pensions & Investments teams, helping build products and customer journeys while meeting legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Advise on the development of the pensions and investments offering, including expanding assets and providing draw‑down options.
  • Support the teams in managing third‑party service providers such as pension trustees, administrators and custodians.
  • Respond to regulatory changes and work with Compliance to ensure compliance.
  • Collaborate with Risk and Control to identify and manage legal and regulatory risks.
  • Prioritise and operate with highest impact across pensions and investments activities.
  • Develop and implement processes and procedures that increase efficiency and scalability of legal advice.
  • Provide training, share insights and educate others on pensions and investments matters.
  • Manage relationships with external counsel, optimise legal spend and obtain best value.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Experience advising on personal pensions and/or retail investment platforms with at least 5 years in a relevant role.
  • Strong technical skills and deep understanding of regulatory and tax issues for pensions and investments; experience in private practice and ideally in‑house at a financial institution or fintech.
  • Team‑player, collaborative, goal‑focused, and impact‑driven.
  • Strategic thinker, strong communicator, problem‑solver who balances business and risk perspectives.
  • Willingness to handle a wide range of legal issues proactively and cost‑effectively.
  • Comfortable operating at all levels, including executive, and liaising with stakeholders.
  • Open to diverse perspectives, critical thinker, not afraid to challenge assumptions.
  • Passionate about banking and technology, eager to contribute to Monzo’s mission.
