Job Description
Job title: Principal Control & Instrumentation Engineer
Location: Barrow-in-Furness, Filton or Manchester (minimum 2 days on site per fortnight). We offer hybrid and flexible working arrangements – please speak to your recruiter about options for this role.
Salary: Negotiable depending on experience
What you’ll be doing:
- Develop a functional design for the Vehicle Control solution for SSNA.
- Work with stakeholders to oversee the delivery of the vehicle control solution and strategy.
- Support assurance activities with the Office of the Chief Engineer.
- Collaborate with the engineering manager to deliver the vehicle control system, reporting progress through agile tools.
- Ensure delivery of the engineering plan on schedule.
- Guide the engineering team on methods and processes.
- Develop technical solutions with the Engineering Delivery Team, supporting team development.
- Engage with legacy stakeholders in developing solutions from baseline designs.
Your skills and experience:
Essential:
- Experience in developing C&I designs for large-scale systems meeting functional, defence, and industrial standards.
- Experience managing non-functional requirements like EMC, shock, etc.
- Proficiency in authoring/reviewing design documents such as I/O schedules, design specifications, interface control documents.
Desirable:
- Degree or equivalent in Engineering, Physics, Maths, or Science.
- Understanding of control system architecture and communication protocols (e.g., RS-485, PROFIBUS).
- Knowledge of IEC 61508 – Functional Safety and safety evidence production.
- Experience with manoeuvring systems in various industries.

The Platform Complex Systems team:
Contribute to the design of the Royal Navy’s next attack class submarine, working with legacy and new control technologies, collaborating with stakeholders, suppliers, and the Royal Navy. Relocation support available for eligible roles.
