Overview We are excited to offer a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Mobile Gas Engineer / Plumber in the North West region of England. The role involves traveling across the region, visiting up to 6 establishments. The salary is competitive, and a van is provided for business use along with a fuel card. A valid driving licence is essential. Standard hours are 39 per week, 08:00 – 17:00, with a requirement to work one weekend in four on a rota basis with a 15% allowance to basic salary. This position is part of the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) account, supporting His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS) by maintaining safe, clean, and efficient prisons across 60 secure premises in England and Wales. What you will do:
Provide a variety of maintenance and reactive tasks in accordance with competency, focusing on detail and compliance. Carry out gas appliance servicing, inspection, combustion analysis, and flue gas integrity testing. Perform tightness testing of commercial gas pipework. Maintain gas interlock systems and mechanical ventilation installations. Execute reactive diagnostics and planned preventive maintenance (PPM) on high‑capacity boilers, radiant tube heaters, and commercial water heaters. Work safely at all times, adhering to Amey’s Zero Code. Carry out PPM activities and reactive repairs, and lead new works, installations, upgrades, and commissioning. Follow Amey/MoJ/HMPPS security protocols, including tool management. Perform any other duties commensurate with the role, including escorting duties as required. Act as RP for disciplines within the skill set.
What you will bring: Qualifications
Currently registered with Gas Safe with commercial endorsements: CODNCO1, CIGA1, ICPN1, TPCP1/TPCP1A. Competence in combustion control systems, ventilation interlocks, and pressure regulation. NVQ Level 3 in Mechanical Engineering or Plumbing (advantageous for water systems). Legionella awareness and compliance. Full UK driving licence. Good all‑round project management knowledge. Willingness to qualify for Amey Gas & Mechanical AP/RP responsibilities.
Desirable Additional Gas qualifications
CODC1, COMCAT1, COMCAT2, COMCAT3, COMCAT5. CMET1, CMET2. REGT2.
Skills & Experience
Basic Health and Safety and site‑specific training as identified by the People Manager. Basic IT skills. Proven track record in commercial gas plant maintenance, including high‑efficiency condensing boilers, forced draft burners, direct‑fired water heaters, and radiant tube heating. Ability to diagnose faults in gas appliances and associated controls. Familiarity with commercial gas installation pipe sizing and complex tightness testing of installation pipework. Experience with elevated gas pressure supplies and over‑pressure protection safety devices. Proven track record with commercial water systems and understanding of water storage systems. Experience with water management compliance and Legionella. Understanding of building maintenance and system compliance (training will be provided). Experience working within a custodial environment (desirable). Ability to work at heights. Ability to work independently and use initiative. Experience working in a commercial environment.
