Mechanical Project Manager - Essex and London area


Salary :- c£65,000-£85,000 Subject to exp

Full benefits package - including Bonus, Company Car, Pension etc..


Location - Essex/London/Project Sites (with flexibility depending on project requirements)

Role Purpose

The Mechanical Project Manager will lead the delivery of multiple mechanical engineering projects from pre‑construction through to completion. The role carries full accountability for programme, commercial performance, quality, safety, client engagement, and development of the company’s self‑delivery mechanical capability.


This is a senior, hands-on role suited to an individual with strong technical mechanical expertise, commercial acumen, and established supply chain relationships.


Key Responsibilities


Project Leadership & Delivery


  • Lead and manage multiple mechanical projects from concept through to final handover, ensuring delivery on time, within scope and budget
  • Take full ownership of project P&L, forecasting, cost control, variations, and cash flow
  • Develop detailed project execution plans, programmes, and resource schedules
  • Identify, assess, and mitigate project risks and opportunities throughout the lifecycle


Technical & Design Oversight


  • Develop, coordinate, and review detailed mechanical designs, specifications, and drawings
  • Ensure technical compliance with relevant standards, regulations, and client requirements
  • Manage mechanical disciplines including (but not limited to): HVAC, pipework fabrication, plantroom installations, and thermal insulation


Supply Chain & Procurement


  • Establish and manage a reliable supply chain of specialist subcontractors and suppliers
  • Lead procurement activities including tendering, subcontractor selection, negotiation, and appointment
  • Manage subcontractor performance to ensure cost, quality, and programme compliance


Health, Safety & Quality


  • Ensure all mechanical installations comply with health & safety legislation, company procedures, and industry best practice
  • Conduct regular site visits, inspections, and progress reviews
  • Drive a culture of quality, safety, and continuous improvement on site


Client & Stakeholder Management


  • Act as the primary point of contact for clients, consultants, and key stakeholders
  • Maintain strong professional relationships and handle client communications effectively
  • Prepare and present programme updates, progress reports, and financial forecasts to senior leadership and clients


Business & Department Growth


  • Play a key role in the growth of the self‑delivery mechanical department
  • Support recruitment, mentoring, and development of mechanical engineers and site teams
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of systems, processes, and delivery capability


Skills, Knowledge & Experience

Essential

  • Proven experience as a Mechanical Project Manager delivering building services / mechanical projects
  • Strong mechanical engineering background (HVAC, pipework, plantrooms, etc.)
  • Demonstrable experience managing project P&L and commercial performance
  • Strong knowledge of UK H&S regulations and mechanical standards
  • Experience managing subcontractors and specialist supply chains
  • Excellent client-facing and stakeholder management skills
  • Strong planning, problem-solving, and leadership capabilities


Desirable

  • Degree or HNC/HND in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services
  • Chartered or working toward professional membership (CIBSE, IMechE, etc.)
  • SMSTS / SSSTS, CSCS
  • Experience in developing in-house / self-delivery mechanical teams
