ROLE OVERVIEW

As Head of Compliance, you will be the driving force behind ensuring our operations not only meet environmental legislation but also set the standard for the industry. You will lead, inspire, and develop our environmental compliance strategy across all operational sites, championing a culture of environmental excellence that's recognised by our customers, regulators, and the wider industry.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Environmental Accreditations and Permitting

• Maintain and manage AATF and ABTO accreditations, ensuring 100% compliance with all relevant regulations and deadlines
• Oversee the application, renewal, and compliance of all Environmental Permits, Exemptions, and Waste Site Licenses
• Lead site audits and inspections from the Environment Agency and other regulators

Regulatory Compliance

• Ensure compliance with WEEE, Packaging, and Battery Regulations under the UK's Producer Responsibility frameworks
• Embed the principles of the Waste Hierarchy across operations and continuously seek ways to reduce environmental impact
• Act as the company's DGSA or manage the relationship with an external DGSA advisor
• Oversee site management competency through WAMITAB coverage and development plans

Waste Transport and Brokerage

• Maintain valid Waste Carrier, Broker, and Dealer registrations, ensuring all requirements are met
• Monitor Duty of Care obligations, ensuring accurate completion of Hazardous Waste Consignment Notes, Waste Transfer Notes, and pre-acceptance documentation

Risk Management and Advice

• Identify current and emerging environmental risks, implementing proactive mitigation strategies
• Advise operational teams and senior leadership on environmental regulations, planning permissions, waste classifications, and storage requirements
• Lead investigations and corrective actions in cases of non-compliance or environmental incidents

Stakeholder Engagement

• Serve as the key operational contact for the Environment Agency, DEFRA, and other regulators
• Represent the business in consultations, working groups, and policy forums

Strategic Development & Service Innovation

• Support and lead planning of investments across operational sites to ensure all developments align with environmental legislation and compliance best practice
• Play a central role in launching and delivering our new Compliance Consultancy Service for customers
• Develop and implement a compliance roadmap aligned with business growth plans, embedding environmental awareness and responsibility across all departments

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential Skills & Experience

• Strong understanding of environmental regulations, including permitting, reporting and compliance requirements
• Proven experience in developing and implementing compliance programs, managing regulatory interactions and driving environmental performance improvements
• Ability to lead and motivate teams, manage projects and build relationships with stakeholders
• Excellent communication skills - able to convey complex information clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing
• Strong analytical skills - able to analyse data, identify trends and develop solutions
• Experience in an industry with significant environmental impact
• Technical ability coupled with the ability to present to external stakeholders and build an additional revenue stream
