Location: UK-Based – Hybrid/Flexible Working Options
Clearance: Must be eligible for SC clearance (DV advantageous)
Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Hardware Architect to play a key role in the design and delivery of complex electronic and electromechanical systems for frigate-class naval platforms. This role is critical to shaping the next generation of maritime systems, with a focus on radar, sonar, and integrated mission systems. The ideal candidate will bring deep hardware engineering experience, particularly in combat systems, naval electronics, and obsolescence management within the defence domain.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the hardware architecture design and integration for frigate platforms, ensuring alignment with naval and customer requirements.
- Define system-level and sub-system-level hardware architecture for radar, sonar, and mission-critical electronics.
- Work closely with multi-disciplinary teams including systems, mechanical, software, and safety engineers to ensure a cohesive design approach.
- Conduct obsolescence risk assessments, mitigation strategies, and roadmap planning to ensure hardware longevity and availability.
- Support platform-level trade studies, technology selections, and integration decisions.
- Produce high-quality design documentation including interface control documents, architecture definitions, and system block diagrams.
- Engage with suppliers and subcontractors to specify, select, and evaluate COTS and bespoke hardware components.
- Provide technical support to bid activities, design reviews, and customer engagements.
- Proven experience as a Hardware Architect or Senior Hardware Engineer in the defence or maritime sector.
- Strong knowledge of frigate or surface ship combat systems, particularly with sonar and radar technologies.
- Expertise in digital and/or analogue hardware design, COTS integration, and environmental constraints for naval environments.
- Experience with obsolescence management tools, methodologies, and lifecycle planning.
- Excellent stakeholder engagement and technical leadership skills.
- Understanding of Def Stan, MIL-STD, or similar military/aerospace standards.
- Degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or related discipline.
- Experience working directly with UK MOD, DE&S, or major naval primes.
- Familiarity with tools such as Altium, OrCAD, Zuken, or similar.
- Knowledge of platform integration and testing processes for naval systems.
- Security Cleared (SC or DV).
Why Join?
You’ll be part of a technically advanced and mission-focused team helping shape next-generation naval capability. The role offers exposure to cutting-edge engineering challenges, long-term platform programmes, and opportunities for career growth within a dynamic defence environment.
