General Manager – Urgent, Emergency & Acute Care

Interim post – 3 months rolling contract (Until substantive recruitment is completed)

Inside ir35 - £45 per hour (37.5 hours a week, Mon – Fri)

We are seeking a dynamic and strategic General Manager to lead our Urgent, Emergency and Acute Care Services within the Integrated Adult Care (IAC) Directorate within this South London Health Services NHS Trust.


This high-profile leadership role will oversee the delivery and continuous improvement of vital front-line services, including:

  • Emergency Department (A&E)
  • Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC)
  • Acute Medical Unit (AMU)
  • Medical Same Day Emergency Care (MSDEC)
  • Urgent Care Alliance (UCA)


Your Impact

You will play a pivotal role in operational excellence and strategic delivery—ensuring patient experience and safety are at the heart of everything we do. Working closely with the Associate Director of Operations (ADO), Clinical Business Unit Leads, and senior clinical teams, you’ll drive innovation and transformation across urgent and emergency pathways.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead delivery of NHS performance standards, KPIs, and commissioning requirements
  • Provide strategic and operational leadership across urgent and emergency care
  • Oversee budget management, workforce planning, and clinical service performance
  • Implement innovative models of care and service redesign
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement and patient-centred care
  • Represent the Trust in external system meetings and contribute to integrated care strategy


About You

  • Proven experience in senior operational management in a multi-disciplinary NHS setting
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to influence clinical and non-clinical stakeholders
  • Deep understanding of urgent and emergency care pathways and NHS policy
  • Confident in managing large teams, complex budgets, and organisational change
  • Highly developed communication, analytical, and decision-making skills
  • Educated to Master’s level or equivalent professional experience


Desirable Experience

  • Familiarity with Cerner Millennium and digital health tools
  • Experience working with urgent care partners such as 111, MIUs, or GP hubs
  • Understanding of Directory of Services (DoS) in emergency pathways
