About the job.
National Highways are looking for a talented Engineer to join our Scheme Development Team in the Northwest region. In this role, you'll collaborate with a skilled group of professionals to develop early solutions for Pavement, Vehicle Restraint System, Fencing, Road Marking and Traffic Sign renewal projects. Your work will directly contribute to maintaining and enhancing the strategic road network (SRN), ensuring it remains safe, efficient, and responsive to the evolving needs of our customers-today and for years to come.
Throughout the planning and development stage of a project, you will support with the activities and resources involved in the identification and development of early solutions for the asset. Working with key stakeholders, including project teams and third parties, you will help coordinate works across the region, providing technical support and ensuring adherence to our defined asset class strategies, policies, and standards
As a flexible working organisation we offer this role from our Penrith, Preston, and Warrington offices. There will be a requirement to travel between our offices, the network, and those of our stakeholders and partners. Please note that the role may also require work during unsociable hours.
You will be required to drive as part of your role, and you will need to have a full driving license with no more than 3 points to be considered for this position and during employment
- Develop early solutions for renewals and/or improvements, including the compiling of relevant documents, evidence and options for value management, taking into account new techniques, materials, buildability and costs.
- Monitor the delivery of agreed early solutions and plans, liaising with the relevant teams to identify and/or rectify issues.
- Identify, prepare technical briefs and manage delivery of survey & feasibility works that support the renewal of assets / improvement schemes.
- Provide technical support to Project Managers by assisting with materials approvals, vetting of contractors' compliance, inspection support on site, and reviewing health and safety files.
- Undertake reviews of third-party designs for compliance to standards, design briefs and design for maintenance requirements.
About you.
- Degree or HND in relevant discipline and appropriate experience or equivalent, membership of professional body is (desirable).
- Experience in highway infrastructure design and in relevant construction and delivery methods and Knowledge of Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) standards and their application on the highways network
- Knowledge of asset condition assessment and degradation modelling
- Understanding of the Value Management process or cost benefit analysis schemes
- Knowledge of CDM 2015 and experience in AutoCAD (desirable)

External candidates will be offered a starting salary at the lower end of the pay scale, while current employees will be appointed in accordance with our established pay policy.
