Design Manager – Construction (DfE Projects)

Overview

I am working with a well-established main contractor delivering major education schemes across the UK. Due to a strong pipeline of education projects, they are seeking an experienced Design Manager with proven Department for Education (DfE) project experience to join their London-based team.


This role will play a key part in managing and coordinating the design process on DfE-funded schemes, ensuring compliance with all technical standards, guidance, and approval gateways.


Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the design process from pre-construction through to completion on DfE schemes
  • Coordinate consultants, architects, and subcontractors to ensure design compliance and programme alignment
  • Ensure all designs meet Department for Education technical standards, output specifications, and compliance requirements
  • Lead design workshops and chair design team meetings
  • Manage design risk, change control, and information flow
  • Work closely with project, commercial, and construction teams to deliver coordinated solutions
  • Support submissions, approvals, and stakeholder engagement throughout the project lifecycle

Essential Requirements

  • Demonstrable experience working on DfE-funded projects (ESSENTIAL)
  • Previous experience as a Design Manager or Senior Design Manager within the construction sector
  • Strong understanding of DfE frameworks, standards, and approval processes
  • Experience delivering education buildings (schools, colleges, or universities)
  • Excellent coordination, communication, and stakeholder management skills
  • Ability to work from a London base (hybrid working may be available depending on the employer)

Desirable

  • Experience working for a main contractor
  • Knowledge of BIM processes and design management software
  • Professional qualification in construction, architecture, or engineering
