Job Summary

The Design Manager leads on behalf of the Senior Design Manager in all aspects of the design, including coordination, submission, compliance, programming and management of design, engineering and assurance. The Design Manager liaises with the Principal Designer, the client, and manages, coordinates, integrates and certifies on behalf of the Senior Design Manager, that the works for the project have been constructed in accordance with the design.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and progress design packages through Concept, Scheme and Detailed design to completion
  • Guide the development of the design to achieve a safe, buildable, operational and maintainable asset that is compliant with Technical and Project Requirements.
  • Ensure a suitable regime of intervention and verification to deliver the necessary technical assurance, particularly where scope is progressively fixed and assured.
  • Develop an approach to design driven by value and collaborative working with the Design team, Construction team and the supply chain/subconsultants.
  • Ensure culture and behaviours meet client Construction Partner Objectives in collaboration with all parties.
  • Maintain an uncompromising commitment to safety.
  • Support the review of major Assurance deliverables.
  • Review and approve of all design submissions before issuing to the client and/or third parties.
  • Review key technical interfaces with adjacent contracts or existing third-party assets.
  • Ensure that technical issues are identified, escalated and resolved as efficiently as possible.
  • Ensure exemplary quality and sustainability standards.
  • Provide technical support to quality and design processes including change control, request for information, non-conformance and defect notices.
  • To implement the processes of the Design Management Plan and BIM Execution Plan, and provide feedback on performance of the design against the Design Management Plan for continuous improvement.
  • To manage a design programme and cost forecast keeping a register of potential risk and opportunities and ensuring the Engineering Change Control process is implemented.
  • Liaise and coordinate with client and relevant stakeholders, including other Technical Leads, the Lead Designer Representative and Assurance Manager.

Technical Skills And Competencies

  • Experience in the application of Network Rail Technical Assurance procedures NR/L2/RSE/02009 & NR/L2/CIV/003 and Network Rail Stakeholder management.
  • Have excellent communication skills (including presentation skills) in English, both written and verbal and the ability to report at both Project and Board level.
  • Ability to manage teams of people in a multi-disciplinary environment.
  • Excellent organisational skills and the ability to plan ahead and manage own time.
  • A good working knowledge of the:
    • Health & Safety at Work Act 1974,
    • Construction Health, Safety and Welfare Regulations 1996
    • Construction Design and Management Regulations 2015
    • Management of health & Safety at Work Regulations 1999 and
    • other relevant legislation
Qualifications, Certifications And Experience

  • Experience within a similar role within an appropriately sized engineering/construction organisation.
  • Educated to degree or higher level or equivalent in a numerate discipline, typically Engineering discipline (or related). A lower educational level, typically HNC or HND, may be acceptable where a very significant level of experience in a senior technical engineering role can be demonstrated.
  • Membership of an appropriate Professional body, typically Chartered member of Institute of Civil Engineering or an international equivalent professional status.
  • Appropriate CSCS and sentinel card.
