Job Summary
South Tyneside and Sunderland Foundation Trust (STSFT) are looking to fill two Specialist Palliative Care consultant posts in Sunderland and South Tyneside. The posts will be community based with support to main hospital sites as required, and on call cover for the 14‑beded IPU at St Benedicts Hospice.
These consultants will deliver Specialist Palliative Medicine across the region, providing consultant‑led care to community services, outpatient services, education and peer support.
Job Responsibilities
Provide consultant‑led community and inpatient hospice care.
Support the multi‑disciplinary team with advice, training, supervision and leadership.
Participate in education, policy and guidance development with the Trust.
Attend on‑call duties and manage training of junior medical staff.
Follow the Trust’s policies, procedures, standing orders and financial instructions.
Ensure adequate arrangements for patient care and staff communication.
Clinical Experience (Essential)
Experience of working within a multi‑professional team.
Competent in managing patients with specialist palliative care needs and at end of life.
Experience of audit and research methodology.
Sound clinical knowledge and ability to apply in the workplace.
Experience in making clinical decisions and managing risk.
Ability to work in a multi‑disciplinary team.
Good communication skills with patients and staff.

Skills in multidisciplinary audit and presentation.
Qualifications (Essential)
Primary medical qualification.
Full GMC registration.
Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within six months of the date of the AAC.
Management and Administrative Experience (Essential)
Understanding of NHS, clinical governance process and resource issues.
Evidence of organisational, management and time‑management skills.
UK Registration and Sponsorship
