An enthusiastic and highly motivated clinician is invited to apply for the position of Consultant Paediatrician with interest in epilepsy in the Women and Children’s division at Newham University Hospital, part of Barts Health NHS Trust.The role offers 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) and has been created following the retirement of a consultant. The successful candidate will join a dedicated team of 6 Consultants in Paediatrics and 7 Consultants in Neonatology.The successful post holder will play a key role in the continued development and delivery of epilepsy services, complementing existing subspecialties while receiving full support and training to expand their expertise in new areas of interest in line with both personal goals and service requirements.A background in paediatric epilepsy is essential. Specialised knowledge in paediatric infectious diseases would be highly desirable. The role is primarily based at Newham University Hospital but may involve opportunities at other sites based on clinical needs and the post holder’s areas of professional interest.ResponsibilitiesBe an integral part of the acute general Paediatric service, participating in the hot week rota on a 1:7 basis.Conduct specialised and general paediatric clinics on a weekly basis.Participate in a 1:7 general Paediatric on‑call rota, including weekend ward rounds and one late shift per week.Take an active role in clinical governance initiatives, including multidisciplinary audits, clinical effectiveness programs, and risk management.Provide evidence‑based care for all inpatients and outpatients.Uphold the clinical and quality standards outlined in the Patients’ Charter and local commissioners’ contracts.Liaise effectively and promptly with General Practitioners, community services, and other healthcare agencies.Promote and maintain team‑based, multidisciplinary working relationships with specialty colleagues and consultant medical staff.Provide leadership in teaching and clinical research activities.Participate fully in departmental management and maintain close collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.Maintain up‑to‑date child protection training and undertake appropriate review and action on cases admitted during attending weeks.Maintain ‘good standing’ with the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) through regular returns of Continuing Medical Education (CME) activities.The Consultant Paediatrician will have clinical accountability for the day‑to‑day management of children at Newham Hospital, operating on a 1:7 consultant of the week rota, along with on‑call duties in a similar rota pattern. The post holder will demonstrate advanced clinical decision‑making and autonomy, working as a highly specialised member of the inter‑professional team to ensure the highest standard of care for patients and their families.The ideal candidate will be a fully accredited Paediatrician with excellent communication skills, capable of working effectively within multidisciplinary teams, collaborating with consultants in Paediatrics & Neonatology, Emergency Medicine, Primary Care, Community Paediatrics, and Allied Health Professionals.Teaching responsibilities will include mentoring undergraduate students, postgraduate medical staff, and other professional groups.
