Consultant in Orthopaedics and TraumaThe closing date is 25 January 2026The Department of Orthopaedics is seeking a (10 PA) consultant to join a dynamic, enthusiastic and forward‑thinking team to support growth in demand for shoulder and elbow surgery in our department.They will be an integral part of the orthopaedic and trauma department delivering multidisciplinary care to both the local South East London population and our tertiary referral network patients. The Orthopaedic Department is currently involved in many exciting initiatives and is looking for an individual with appropriate skills to complement this team, and help keep the service in the forefront of clinical and academic excellence.The Department offers a wide range of service to patients. The post holder will undertake outpatient and inpatient sessions on a flexible basis. This is an excellent opportunity to join a first‑class team in an active and progressive central London teaching hospital environment.Main duties of the jobTo provide an orthopaedic trauma service in conjunction with colleagues, the appointee should have a special interest in shoulder and elbow trauma.The appointee will have a specialist expertise in elective Shoulder and elbow surgery both arthroscopic shoulder and elbow surgery and arthroplasty of both the shoulder and elbow.To participate in clinical and other service activities with the object of ensuring a high standard of patient care.To take an active part in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training.To contribute to the management of the clinical service and service development.About usThe Trust includes St Thomas’ Hospital, Guy’s Hospital, Evelina London Children’s Hospital (GSTT) and both adult and children’s community services in Lambeth and Southwark.We provide a full range of hospital services for our local communities in Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham, as well as specialist services for patients from further afield, including cancer, cardiothoracic, women’s and children’s services, kidney care and orthopaedics. For further information about King’s Health Partners, King's College London and our research please see the following links.Job responsibilitiesThis post is for a consultant orthopaedic surgeon with a sub‑special interest in shoulder and elbow to support growth in demand for surgery in our department. They will be an integral part of the orthopaedic and trauma department delivering multidisciplinary care to both the local South East London population and our tertiary referral network patients.The post holder would be joining the shoulder and elbow service consisting of 3 consultants and a trauma service of 10 consultants.On the St Thomas site, the consultant would work with the Orthopaedic Trauma Team to deliver acute fracture care both virtually, face to face and trauma operating. On the Guy’s site, the consultant will deliver elective arthroplasty, revision arthroplasty, arthroscopic repairs, stabilisation and fracture fixations. You will also be working alongside colleagues from hospitals across South London in developing the regional hubs.Professional QualificationsEligible for full UK GMC registration and a Licence to Practise.On GMC Specialist Register or within six months of attaining CCT.FRCS (Tr & Orth) or equivalent.Clinical ExperienceComprehensive clinical experience in orthopaedics and trauma.Fellowship in Shoulder and Elbow Surgery.Experience of working in complex shoulder and elbow trauma.Experience of primary and revision shoulder and elbow arthroplasty on fellowship.Clinical SkillsAbility to work as an effective member of a multidisciplinary team.Audit Management & ITTrack record and evidence of contribution to effective clinical governance, coding, audit, management and IT skills.Understanding of principles of audit.Evidence of understanding of the role of clinical management.Management or leadership training or qualification.Evidence of leadership in the development of services.Research, Teaching skill & ExperienceTrack record of research, publications & knowledge of research ethics.Proven formal experience of teaching and training undergraduates, postgraduates and junior medical staff including higher orthopaedic training.Understanding of the principles and applications of clinical research.Evidence of original research.Teaching qualification.Communication; Ability to communicate with clarity and intelligently in written and spoken English; ability to build rapport, listen, persuade/ negotiate.Accountability; Ability to take responsibility, lead, make decisions and exert appropriate authority.Interpersonal Skills; Empathy, understanding, listening skills, patience and ability to work co‑operatively with others.Able to change and adapt, respond to changing circumstances and to cope with setbacks or pressure.Ability to work as part of a team.Staff Management; Experience of performance management, developing and motivating staff.Finance; Knowledge of finance and budgets.Management or leadership training or qualification.Disclosure and Barring Service CheckThis post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust£109,725 to £145,478 a year per annum excl.
