Pay Rate: £223.73 per day PAYE
Hours: 37 per week (case by case basis so may not be full time hours)
Contract Length: 24 months - (note this role is ad-hoc, not a 5 day a week role, depending on how many cases there are, however you will be required to support current case reviewers.Location: Fully remoteSecurity Clearance: SC preferred but will consider those without)
Case Reviewer / Legal Officer
An independent oversight office responsible for reviewing complaints concerning Service Police forces is seeking an experienced legal professional to undertake independent case reviews and provide legal support.
The office oversees the complaints process relating to the conduct of members of the Service Police and works to support high standards of professionalism, accountability and public confidence in Service policing.
A key part of the role involves reviewing the outcomes of investigations into complaints about the Service Police. Complainants may request an independent review if they are dissatisfied with the outcome of an investigation.
Key Responsibilities
Lead independent reviews of investigations into complaints about the conduct of members of the Service Police and Service Police forces, in accordance with the Service Police (Complaints etc.) Regulations 2023.
Assess investigation outcomes and determine whether they are reasonable, proportionate and compliant with applicable regulations and procedures.
Draft review determinations, reports and professional correspondence.
Communicate effectively with complainants and Service Police representatives regarding review processes and outcomes.
Identify potential learning and recommendations that may improve standards within Service policing and strengthen confidence in the complaints system.
Provide guidance to colleagues on relevant legislation and regulatory frameworks where required.
Assist in fulfilling responsibilities under data protection legislation, including handling Freedom of Information and Subject Access Requests.
Manage sensitive case material and confidential government information appropriately.
Essential Requirements
Barrister authorised by the Bar Council to practise in England and Wales (not in training); or
Solicitor admitted by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and authorised to practise in England and Wales with a minimum of two years’ post-qualification experience (PQE).
Strong legal analytical skills and the ability to interpret and apply legislation and regulatory frameworks.
Excellent attention to detail.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience drafting professional reports.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
Sound judgement and the ability to make balanced, evidence-based decisions.
Working knowledge of disclosure principles.
Full UK driving licence.
Desirable Experience
Knowledge of the Service Justice System.
Knowledge of Service law and the criminal law of England and Wales.
Experience reviewing investigations, complaints processes, or regulatory decision-making.
Security Clearance
This role requires Security Check (SC) clearance. Candidates who already hold SC clearance are encouraged to apply; however, applicants who are eligible and able to obtain SC clearance will also be considered.
Working Pattern
Work will be allocated on a case-by-case basis, and there is no guarantee of full-time work.
