Business Integrity, a team of specialist ethics and compliance professionals, plays a central role in promoting and protecting our Spirit of Integrity through designing, implementing, and monitoring an effective, risk-based, agile, and future-forward ethics and compliance program, while business partnering effectively with our market and functional leaders.
Africa is in a period of “hypercare” requiring an enhanced level of support to manage a number of compliance related issues and investigations and deliver a cultural reset at Market level. Having been without a Regional lead for a period of time, there is also an urgent need to re-establish the connection and oversight between Markets and Region as well as manage the Project Nova transition to a successful outcome. The BI Region lead will act as the first point of contact for the Africa Regional President & Leadership team positioning the BI function as a culture enabler that promotes ethical and compliant behaviour across all levels.
Leadership responsibilities:
Ability to act as a culture enabler by promoting a strong tone-at-the-top, tone-from-the-middle and embedding a proactive and ethical compliance culture across all levels of the Region’s organization. During the “hypercare” period, the role will provide strategic guidance to the Africa Exec on BI controls, risks, and compliance matters, providing guidance on the re-establishment of a strong BI function and the delivery of Project Nova. The role will re-establish the connection between the SWC and Market teams to ensure issues, SpeakUps and investigations are appropriately flagged, escalated and managed at market investigation. Where appropriate, the role holder will also run investigations that require above-Market management. Partnering with the Business Integrity Director – Africa, Europe & APAC, they will oversee and manage the in-Market BI teams. On all aspects of the BI agenda including policy implementation and culture; training and awareness; risk management and investigations.
Key responsibilities:
The purpose of this role is to provide strategic and operational support to the Region focusing on driving and cultivating a culture of integrity.
- Policy Implementation and Culture: Provide strategic expertise in embedding of global policies and standards within the region, tailoring interventions to address local needs. Act as a culture enabler by fostering a strong tone-at-the-top and ensuring leadership accountability in promoting ethical and compliant behavior across all markets within the region. Lead tailored engagement strategies to proactively embed the Code of Business Conduct (COBC) and related policies, reinforcing a culture of integrity at all levels.
- Training, Communication, and Awareness: Partner with BI market leads to deliver market-specific training programs and awareness initiatives on the CoBC and compliance policies such as Integrity days and Ethics moments.
- Risk Management Support: Facilitate Market RMCs, with a focus on proactive risk management and addressing emerging risks through preventive measures. Partner with the market BI leads on local risk identification and mitigation activities. Facilitate the collection of Key Risk Indicators (KRIs) and report market-level risks to regional governance forums.
- Speak Up and Investigations Support: Lead and manage CoBC speak up investigations as required (including in market and above market cases), oversee speak up processes, manage breach investigations, and conduct root cause analyses to address systemic issues, improve compliance culture and ensure appropriate implementation of remediation actions.
- Monitoring and BI Controls Implementation: Partner with the market BI leads to monitor key BI controls such as Gifts & Entertainment (G&E) and Conflicts of Interest (COI) in the Region and implement mitigation measures as needed.
- Data and Reporting Support: Provide local data inputs for regional and global reporting, ensuring timely and accurate submissions. Conduct basic data analysis to identify trends and escalate insights for further action.
- Governance and Reporting Support: Support Region-level governance processes, such as periodic reviews and local governance forums.
- Change Management Support: Assist with the rollout of new BI programs and regulatory updates within the Region, ensuring alignment with local operations.
- Team leadership and talent development: Develop and execute career development plans for team members, offering mentorship, coaching, and access to learning opportunities to build future leaders in compliance.
Experience:
- 10+ years’ experience in compliance, ethics, governance, risk management, and internal controls. Familiarity with investigations and root cause analysis; audit or legal experience is a plus but not mandatory.
- Strong analytical skills to identify risks and trends and provide actionable insights. Attention to detail to ensure high-quality execution of compliance initiatives.
- High level of personal integrity and the ability to role model ethical behaviour.
- Skilled at working through ambiguity and complexity, with the ability to adapt to fast-paced environments.
- Strong focus on execution, delivering results to impeccably high standards.
- Experience working across diverse cultures and geographies, with the ability to adapt communication and engagement strategies to local contexts.
- Ability to foster collaboration and teamwork across different functions.
- Strong communication skills to deliver training, drive awareness, and influence stakeholders on compliance matters. Ability to simplify complex compliance topics for local teams and ensure alignment with global standards.
- Successful management of senior stakeholders at all levels and proven ability to hold others to account, resulting in strong and positive outcomes.
