Bid Writer – Highways | Chelmsford, Essex | Hybrid Working | £50,000 - £52,000
A independent contractor with over 30 years of experience delivering highways and public realm projects across the South East is seeking an experienced Bid Writer to join their expanding team based in Chelmsford, Essex. This is a fantastic opportunity to play a key role in producing high-quality, strategic submissions for major highways and infrastructure projects.
As Bid Writer, you will work closely with the Bid Director to shape submission strategies, develop compelling content, and ensure each bid reflects the company’s strengths and client-focused approach.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead or support the production of written responses for quality submissions.
- Conduct interviews with operational and corporate staff to gather content.
- Write and edit responses to ensure clarity, consistency, and alignment with client expectations.
- Research client strategies and integrate insights into submission themes.
- Liaise with subcontractors and suppliers to gather supporting evidence.
- Attend site visits to inform case studies and project narratives.
- Support the preparation of mid-bid and post-submission presentations.
- Attend client meetings to support handovers and gather feedback.
- Analyse feedback from successful and unsuccessful bids to drive continuous improvement.
- Maintain and develop bid collateral, including case studies and best practice examples.
- Attend project close-out meetings and visit live sites to capture lessons learned.
Skills & Experience
- Proven experience in bid writing, ideally within highways or civil engineering.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple deadlines.
- Confident working independently and collaboratively across teams.
- Degree-level qualification or equivalent experience.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and bid-related software tools.
- Experience mentoring or supporting junior team members is desirable.
